My Work

  • Liaising with Clients: Kept open communication through regular client calls, updates, and documentation to ensure both parties were aligned in game direction and scope.
  • Leading the Team: As lead designer, led strike teams to develop features, support the client’s needs, and worked closely with production to keep the game on scope and quality.
  • Adapting the Game: Designed the UX flow to best adapt the real-world sport into VR, as well as supporting UI for user-flow for match-finding and in game score tracking for both single and multiplayer.
  • Designing the Content: Ideated 100 individual collectable bags and boards, covering myriad themes to represent players from around the world.

Gameplay

The backyard sport of Cornhole is intuitively easy to play in the real world, but deceptively difficult to adapt for the virtual.

The game itself is simple, players take turns pitching corn-filled sacks onto a board 9 yards away. Landing a bag on the board is worth 1 point, while sinking it into the hole near the top of the board is worth 3 points. Each player has 4 bags a round, with, thanks to the sport’s cancelation scoring, the winner of each round scoring game points equal to the difference between the two round points scored. First to 21 wins the match!

While fairly simple on the surface, because scoring is only calculated at the end of a round, there is plenty of space for skilled pitchers to explore tactical play. Intentionally landing a bag in front of the hole blocks your opponent from making easy throws into the hole, or risk pushing your bag into the hole anyway. It’s a tactile game of subtle touch and spin to control the trajectory of the bag, and it’s behavior once it lands on the board.
